The Misinterpretation of Prismatic Hungarian Pastimes. Acrylic on Canvas. 60x48. 2025
Well, if you want to know more about this painting you can watch Episode One of David Makes Paintings: The Show. Basically, this piece is based on an experience I had at a bath house in Budapest, Hungary a few years back. There are many bath houses there across the city, but my favorite was the Gellert Bath House and Spa near city center. The beautiful tile work there was just amazing and I wanted to pay tribute to that experience in one way or another….but I decided to go with more red tones and keep the crowd size to a minimum as you can see.
Side notes: Making a cameo in this piece is lucky Number 13, the aging donkey. The recording of the Timelapse for this piece took place over 6 months. Cupcakes=joy, memories/nostalgia. The pink rags symbolize cleanliness, or more accurately, a ritual cleansing of sorts….not always demonic in representative culture. This is a flat painting with a relatively two dimensional scene, using matte medium to flatten the paint even more, which helps it to avoid any reflection, but also gives the paint a simpler appearance, similar to tempera experiments in grade school.
